HEMA Advanced Diagnostic Laboratory plc

HEMA was established in 2010 (23/04/2003 EC). Currently active in the private health sector, the company renders medical laboratory services. HEMA wants to be recognized as an organization providing world-class lab services in Ethiopia. The company was founded by Dawit Moges who has a diploma in engineering and lab-tech, Masters’s in Public Health, and a bachelor’s and master’s in Economics. Dawit and his father first built the Sister Aklesia Memorial Hospital in Nazareth in memory of his mother. It was the first private hospital in the Oromia region. In 2004 they brought former hospital CEO from the Netherlands, via PUM, to the hospital to give advice. After 5/6 years, they had a lab specialist via PUM that helped them with the ISO certification. After a couple of year, Dawit did not want to drive to the hospital every day and he had the innovative idea to set up a boutique laboratory that serves the eastern zone of Addis Ababa. HEMA Is the first private company in health care that is ISO accredited in Ethiopia (January 15, 2014). The accreditation is given by the Ethiopian National Accreditation Office (ENAO) and a third party. They were therefore mentioned as ‘a success story’ in the USAID newsletter. They therefore also had to put in place all kinds of policies (such as having an HR manual, safety manual) and have done an environmental safety assessment. The company already has a business plan, written by Dawit himself 5 years ago. HEMA finds CSR important, the company has 10 social objectives and parameters to measure this. An example is the number of customer complaints. Every weekly meeting is discussed; how many were there? How can we improve? In addition, they have discounts for people who are in need of financial aid and if they have tests that expire soon they test people free of charge. All staff is trained 4 times per year. The company also adheres to the labor laws; the staff all have job descriptions and are given the necessary protective clothing etc. Moreover, Dawit prefers to give job opportunities to women. That is why most of the employees are female. In addition, Dawit gives them the opportunity to grow. One of the cleaners was first promoted to lab assistant and now she is studying accounting (high school, 10the grader) and is the main cashier of HEMA. In the area of environment, HEMA has a contract with trash collectors to collect all the trash, they have a no-waste paper policy.
