Maheder Food Processing PLC

After completing her MSc in Public Health, owner Maheder Admasu created Maheder Food Processing PLC in 2013. Maheder strives not only to cater to the local market but also to fulfil the international demand by rendering Ethiopian traditional cuisine, drinks (Tej, Tela), readymade stews, and sauces. Maheder’s drive to see her business succeed, lead her to be one of the finalists in a national venture competition a few years back. Her business idea in the competition was to provide packed traditional foods, stew, sauces, spices, and drinks. With her passion for cooking food plus her success with the competition, she started her business right. What makes her business unique is that she distributes traditional stews which is not very common in Ethiopia. She distributes her products to supermarkets, hotels, and individuals in Addis Ababa. There’s a testing center so that customers can order by testing the products they want. Her products go through frequent quality control checks from the sub-city. The company has 5 full-time and 2-part time employees, of which 3 are female and 7 are youth. The management consists of 3 young females. Maheder Food Processing Understands the importance of CSR. For instance, there is an additional charge of 25 cents for products sold in the testing center or private orders. The 25 cents are accumulated and donated to provide meals for less fortunate kids. All staff members are females to which the company provides meal, uniforms, and an accommodating restroom facility (soap is provided). The company also adheres to the labor laws, even though the staff doesn’t have written job descriptions. In the area of environmental sustainability, the company does not have any paper waste and separates the recyclable materials from the waste; however, the company uses gas, charcoal, and electricity as a source of energy. These sources of energy make it hard to manage the smoke that emits out of the kitchen.
