ECBE Honey and Candle Production

ECBE Honey and Candle Production

Emebet Commercial Beekeeping for Environment (ECBE) was established in 2009 on a plot of land in Gasure Karatja Kebele, bordering the Wabe River, Cheha Woreda, in the Gurage Zone. Sustainable beekeeping takes place on 10 Ha land, by integrating it with coffee in a 3 ½ ha area. The needed biomass was developed over a few years. Reforestation of mainly indigenous trees and planting of flowers is ongoing to fill the gap of deficiency of forage for the bees occurring in the dry season. The collaboration with 382 out-growers in the Woreda provides the potential to scale up and build the capacity of beekeepers. This allows them to supply bulk and quality honey and by-products to ECBE while improving the environment and addressing gender issues. Of 382 out-growers 40 are women. 15 women will be trained to produce candles and give workshops to the visitors. This will increase tourist length of stay, stimulate spending, and channel a share of tourism revenues to the local economy. ECBE offers practical advice to the farmers by engaging local as well as international experts.
