ECBE Honey and Candle Production

Emebet Commercial Beekeeping for Environment (ECBE): Empowering Women and Nurturing Nature
Established in 2009 within the serene landscapes of Gasure Karatja Kebele, alongside the flowing Wabe River in the Gurage Zone, Emebet Commercial Beekeeping for Environment (ECBE) stands as a testament to sustainable progress and environmental stewardship. This visionary endeavor not only exemplifies responsible beekeeping practices but also embraces the power of collaboration and empowerment, particularly for women.
A Haven for Sustainability:
Spanning 10 hectares of land, ECBE embodies the harmony between nature and agriculture. The integration of beekeeping with coffee cultivation across a 3 ½ hectare area is a shining example of sustainable coexistence. Over the years, the required biomass has been nurtured, complemented by ongoing reforestation efforts featuring indigenous trees and vibrant flowers. This ensures a year-round forage source for the bees, bridging the gap during dry seasons.
Empowering Women in Beekeeping:
ECBE’s impact extends beyond honey production; it extends its arms of opportunity to local women. Among the 382 out-growers collaborating with ECBE, 40 are women who have found a platform to participate actively in the beekeeping journey. Recognizing the invaluable role of women, ECBE uplifts their voices and contributions, ultimately fostering gender equity in the community.
Fostering Skill Diversity: Candles and Workshops:
The commitment to empowerment doesn’t end with beekeeping. ECBE envisions a brighter future for the women out-growers. In a transformative move, 15 women are being trained to craft candles and host workshops for visitors. This initiative not only broadens the scope of skills but also boosts tourism by enriching the experience for visitors. Longer stays, increased spending, and the infusion of tourism revenues into the local economy become a reality.
Knowledge Sharing for Growth:
ECBE doesn’t just impact the environment; it also elevates farmers through practical guidance. The engagement of local and international experts exemplifies the organization’s commitment to nurturing knowledge. This knowledge-sharing approach not only benefits the immediate community but also sets a precedent for responsible and impactful farming practices.
Emebet Commercial Beekeeping for Environment (ECBE) stands as a living example of how entrepreneurship, environmental consciousness, and women’s empowerment intertwine to create a legacy of positive change. As the bees hum in harmony and the candles flicker with promise, ECBE lights the way towards a future where collaboration nurtures the earth, empowers women, and ushers in prosperity for all.
